Fluoride Treatment

ABOUT FLUORIDE TREATMENT
Fluoride is a cornerstone of most comprehensive dental health regimens, found naturally in specific foods and beverages. Additionally, it can be applied topically to enamel, providing numerous oral benefits. Fluoride helps protect against cavities by fortifying teeth, making them less susceptible to plaque buildup. Furthermore, it can strengthen the tooth’s structure, potentially reversing early-stage decay.
At Inpso Dental, we proudly offer professional fluoride services for patients of all ages, including children and adults. Our dedicated team, led by Dr. Dorothy Lee, provides expert fluoride treatments in Red Bank, NJ. To discover how fluoride can enhance your dental wellness, schedule an appointment with us today.
ABOUT FLUORIDE TREATMENTS
Fluoride treatments are a preventive dental service designed to strengthen tooth enamel and help protect against cavities. During a fluoride treatment, a concentrated fluoride solution is applied directly to the teeth in the form of a gel, foam, or varnish. The fluoride quickly absorbs into the enamel, reinforcing it to resist acid attacks from bacteria and sugars, which are primary causes of tooth decay.
This treatment is particularly beneficial for children, whose developing teeth are more susceptible to cavities, but it’s also valuable for adults at higher risk of decay, including those with dry mouth, gum disease, or a history of frequent cavities. Fluoride treatments are quick, painless, and can often be completed during a regular dental check-up. By adding a protective layer to teeth, fluoride treatments help ensure stronger, healthier teeth and contribute to long-term oral health.
WHAT TO EXPECT WITH FLUORIDE TREATMENTS
At Inpso Dental, we typically recommend fluoride treatments twice a year, following a professional cleaning and annual dental exam. After selecting your preferred flavor, we will apply the fluoride in liquid, gel, foam, or varnish form. The fluoride is typically left on the enamel for 1 – 4 minutes to allow sufficient time for penetration into the teeth. For optimal benefits from your fluoride treatment, it’s advisable to wait at least 30 minutes before consuming food or beverages.
While fluoride treatments effectively combat tooth decay, we also encourage daily brushing with fluoridated toothpaste and rinses. Additionally, we recommend attending biannual dental exams and thorough cleanings, during which Dr. Dorothy Lee can assess your overall dental health.
WHAT TO EXPECT DURING A FLUORIDE TREATMENT?
01
Cleaning the Teeth
Before the fluoride treatment, a dental hygienist will clean your teeth thoroughly to remove any plaque and tartar. This allows the fluoride to adhere directly to the enamel for maximum effectiveness.
02
Choosing the Fluoride Form
Fluoride treatments are available in several forms, including gel, foam, and varnish. The dentist or hygienist will select the appropriate type based on your needs and preference. Many fluoride products come in various flavors to make the experience more pleasant, especially for children.
03
Applying the Fluoride
- The fluoride is then applied directly to your teeth. Depending on the type, the fluoride may be:
- Painted On: With fluoride varnish, a small brush is used to paint the fluoride onto each tooth. This type dries quickly and requires minimal time.
- Tray Application: For gel or foam treatments, you may be asked to bite down on a tray filled with fluoride gel or foam. The tray remains in place for a few minutes, allowing the fluoride to coat the teeth fully.
04
Setting Time
05
Aftercare Instructions
Once the treatment is complete, you’ll receive instructions for aftercare. Generally, you’ll be asked not to eat, drink, or rinse your mouth for 30 minutes to give the fluoride ample time to set and maximize its effectiveness.
06
Frequency of Treatment
Depending on your dental health needs, your dentist may recommend fluoride treatments every six months or more frequently if you’re at higher risk for cavities or enamel erosion.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU GET A FLUORIDE TREATMENT?
01
Every Six Months (Standard)
02
Every Three to Four Months (Higher Risk Individuals)
People with a higher risk of cavities or enamel erosion may benefit from more frequent treatments, around every three to four months. This includes:
- Individuals with a history of frequent cavities
- Those with dry mouth (xerostomia) due to medication, medical conditions, or aging
- Patients with gum disease or receding gums exposing the roots
- People wearing braces or other orthodontic appliances that can trap plaque
03
Once a Year (Low Risk)
For individuals with excellent oral health, minimal cavity history, and access to fluoridated water, once-a-year fluoride treatments may be sufficient. However, this frequency should be confirmed with a dentist, as they can best determine individual needs based on health assessments.
Additional Considerations:
- Children: Children are often recommended fluoride treatments every six months due to their increased susceptibility to cavities while their teeth are still developing.
- Adults and Seniors: Adults and seniors with exposed roots or who experience enamel wear may also benefit from more frequent fluoride treatments.
Consulting with a dentist helps determine the best frequency based on specific oral health needs, lifestyle, and any risk factors for decay.
